We have just put out lots of new books so come take a look and stock up for vacation.

Finally, if you haven't yet, visit our online newsstand for current events in a variety of areas. The Online Newsstand Project was developed by Steve Butzel at the Portsmouth Public Library, and librarians around the state help contribute to the project. If you are accessing our newsstand at home, you will need to use the EBSCO username and password to read the articles. No password needed in school.

Our library has a new resource for staff and students, called LibGuides. LibGuides are research pathfinders and collections of information/resources on a variety of topics. We will keep adding to these as the year progresses, but examples of current LibGuides include information on how to use GoogleDocs, Copyright and Plagiarism, Remembrance of 9/11, Website Evaluation, and Research Steps. Teachers may choose to create a LibGuides for a particular unit of study. Take a look!

September is almost over already. Bookclubs for all grades have begun, and students are busy with classes and sports. High school homecoming is next weekend. All the library Nooks are checked out, as well as lots of new books that came in over the summer. If you haven't visited the library yet, come see us to take a look at what's new.

Yesterday, I came across Hank Green's Read It 1st pledge, which is something he started to get people motivated to read the book before seeing the movie. In 2010, half of the top selling movies were based on books. Take a look at his YouTube video (it's funny!):

This past Friday, June 10, the Class of 2011 graduated from Hopkinton High School. Congratulations to all the graduates, and we wish you all the best in the future. For the rest of our students, school ends on June 23rd.

This has been a fast year, with many changes to our library. We started the year with new computers and netbooks, added Nook ereaders, and continued with very active book clubs for all grades. Our book clubs read a total of over ten books!

Nook Update

An update on the Nook ereaders: The Hopkinton PTA delivered not two, but THREE Nook ereaders to our library on March 25, 2011. We have been cataloging them, purchasing Nook ebook titles, and getting ready to loan them out to our high school students. We are almost ready, with an anticipated date for circulation set for April 11, 2011. Come ask us about them!

Thanks to the generosity of our Hopkinton PTA, we will be able to purchase two Barnes & Noble Nook ereaders. We chose the Nook over Amazon's Kindle because the Nook is compatible with the NH State Library's subscription to Overdrive, accessed through the Hopkinton Town Library. This extends the amount of titles that we can offer. We are really excited to offer this opportunity to our students and staff. The Nooks will check out just like a book - for a period of three weeks. We will provide more information on our library website, with tutorial information for students. Once again, a HUGE thank you to our PTA!

Award Winners

Yesterday, the American Library Association announced this year's award winners for Youth Media. In the Young Adult category, the Printz Award for Excellence in YA Literature went to the novel Shipbreaker, by Paolo Bacigalupi. The award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults went to Janis Joplin: Rise Up Singing, by Ann Angel. Come to the library to get these books and to see if you agree!

Next week is a shorter week because of holiday break. Get your books for vacation now! While you're at it, think about which books might be good choices for next year's Flume List or Isinglass list. You can nominate books for the Flume list by using the online form at the Nashua Public Library, or by filling out a form in the library. You can nominate books for the Isinglass Award by downloading a form at the Barrington Public Library, and turning it in to Mrs. Zecha or Ms. Moore. Nominations for next year are due by January 14, 2011.

Podcasts for the Isinglass Awards are ongoing. How many of the nominated titles have you read so far?

Welcome back from vacation, everybody. Come to the library to see all the new titles we've just put out on display. There are lots! Also, thanks in part to our wonderful PTA, the library has just upgraded our quiz buzzer system to a wireless system. We now have 16 wireless buzzers for our students to use.

Second Skype Session with Susan Campbell Bartoletti

In December, our 8th grade book club had the opportunity to Skype with author Conor Kostick. Mr. Kostick has written two books for young adults: Epic and Saga. Our book club read Epic, and we had lots of questions for Mr. Kostick. It was an excellent conversation, and a wonderful opportunity for our students.

Yesterday, we completed our second Skype session with author Susan Campbell Bartoletti. Ms. Bartoletti has written several books. Our book club read The Boy Who Dared, a historical fiction novel about a German teen during Hitler's regime.

Using Skype has given us the opportunity to have conversations with these authors, asking questions and gaining insight into the stories we have read. We look forward to more sessions with our favorite authors!

Wow! It's time to update the library news. We have lots of new titles that have just arrived - come by and check them out!

From now until January 15th, we will be taking nominations for the 2011 NH Flume Teen Choice Award list. Please consider any great books you have read that were published from 2007-2009. If the book is part of a series, it must be able to stand on its own (meaning you don't have to read the previous books in the series to understand the story). Paper nomination forms are in the library, or you can nominate a title online.

Teen Read Week is here. The theme is, "Read Beyond Reality." We will be reading as a school for the first 15 minutes of block 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the first 15 minutes of block 2 on Thursday and Friday. Thanks for your participation! It's hard to believe that this is our 4th week of school. The library is in full swing now, with special displays for the Isinglass and Flume 2009-2010 titles. We also have a display of staff favorites - come in and take a look at what your teachers' favorites are!

The Page Turners had their first meeting last Thursday. If you missed that meeting, please come join us for the next one. Look for the yellow signs in the hallways advertising the next meeting date.

Finally, when it's time for you to do an Internet search, try using Goodsearch. This search engine is powered by Yahoo, and after you select Hopkinton School District as your charity of choice, every search you complete gives the School District 1 cent. It's free money!

Isinglass and Flume voting time!

Just a quick reminder to vote this week for your favorite Isinglass book or Flume book. We are collecting votes in the library through Friday, May 1st. You can also vote for your favorite Flume book online.

Also, Thursday, April 30th, is "Poem in Your Pocket" day. The idea behind this day is to carry a poem with you and share it with someone at some point in the day. Check out the Academy of American Poets' website for more information. We have poems in the library for you to choose from, or pick your own!

New eBooks in the Library!

We have just added 20 eBooks to our collection. These books cover a wide variety of subject areas, and can be accessed 24/7 from anywhere you have internet access. From the library homepage, simply click on Gale Virtual Reference, and once you are on the virtual reference page, you can place your search term in the search box and all 20 eBooks will be searched. Another option is to click on "show all," and then click on the specific title of the book you are interested in searching. If you click on the eBook index, the pages are hyperlinked from that location. If you logon to the eBook site outside of school, you will need a password (see the librarians for password info.).

Some examples of the reference books available online include: American Decades and American Decades Primary Sources (2oth century U.S. history), World Eras, Major Acts of Congress, World War I, World War II, America at War, Colonial America, Middle Ages, American Social Reform Movements, Student Animal Life Encyclopedia, and Bowling, Beatniks, and Bell Bottoms: Pop Culture of 20th Century America.

Isinglass and Flume Voting Times Are Almost Here

This month, we will be finishing up our podcast series on the Isinglass Award nominated titles for this year. Voting for both this award and the Flume Award will take place in April. To listen to an Isinglass book podcast, click on "Isinglass Booktalks" on the left hand side of the library homepage.

For those Hopkinton Middle/High School teachers who are reading this, check out the teacher wiki (only available inside the school) for "websites of the week," URLs of interest that may be helpful, too!

Finally, starting this month, we will become a "bookcrossing.com" site. We will have a cart of books in the library, free for the taking, and each book will have a Bookcrossing ID number listed on the inside of the front cover. The idea is that after you read the book, you visit the bookcrossing.com site, plug in the book's ID number, and journal a brief entry about the book (anonymous - no registration required). After that, you are free to pass on the book by leaving it in another location for someone else to find. Please see the library staff for more details on this fun program, and look for the book cart to browse for free books!

End of Semester One - Already!

It's hard to believe that semester one for this school year is just about done. Semester two starts tomorrow, January 28, 2009, as a Day 1.

Look for lots of new books in the library, as we just finished placing an order. Many of the books we ordered were teacher and student requests. Some of the titles include Chains by L.H. Anderson, I Am Scout: The Biography of Harper Lee, Scat by Carl Hiaasen, and The Dead and the Gone, by Susan Beth Pfeffer.

Over the past few weeks, we have been transitioning from our old library software, Spectrum, to our new software, Destiny. Our new software is web-based, so students, staff, and community members can search for materials from any computer that has internet access. Please take a look:

There is a lot happening here in the library, and we can't believe it's the end of November already! We wish all our staff and students and their families a happy Thanksgiving holiday break. Take some time to enjoy a good book.

Upcoming Page Turners' meeting times are Tuesday, 12/2, and Tuesday, 12/16, during 1st lunch. We hope you join us for continued discussion of The Hungry Tide and The Wind in the Willows.

We have had a lot of new books arrive in the past several weeks. Ask us if you need a recommendation. One of our new favorites is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

Finally, look for our "book swap" cart that will be introduced soon - books free for the taking. We will be registering those books with bookcrossing.com, a website that assigns ID numbers to registered books, so that anyone who picks up a book with an ID can write a brief journal entry about the book, free and anonymously. The goal is to then leave the book somewhere else for a stranger to pick up and read. The idea is to keep books circulating in the world, free, with people journaling about the books as they read them - kind of like a "message in a bottle." Some quotes about bookcrossing.com: "an online trend that has people committing random acts of kindness" (National Public Radio); "an innovative attempt to make the whole world a library" (Yahoo.com); "a phenom among readers with a taste for mischief and a touch of altruism" (The Los Angeles Times); and "a craze that is catching on globally" (The London Times). If you visit bookcrossing.com/hunt, you can locate books that have been "released" in NH, and see if you can catch them.

Tape to DVD Gets Easier!

With the addition of a new Sony VCR/DVDR, we can now help your students take their completed video projects from DV, mini-DV, and D8 (even VHS...) tapes directly to DVD.

For the "more than you might have wanted to know" details, see the two newest Library Survival Sheets, Dubbing from a DV Camera to a DVD & Dubbing from a VHS Tape to a DVD. (Both are .pdf files.)

This will be especially helpful to PC filmmakers who do not have DVD burning capabilities at home, or to anyone else who wants to edit on a program other than iMovieHD.

Flume Winner Announced
